One of our Adult Care services in Rotherham have recently transformed their conservatory into a Little Mermaid themed sensory experience. The project was requested by one resident who is a big fan of Disney, but is currently being enjoyed by everyone who lives there.
Progress House in South Yorkshire provides residential support for up to five individuals with learning disabilities. Many of the people who live there are very tactile, and so the care team at the service work hard to develop activities and projects which incorporate sensory stimulation.
This particular piece of work was developed to engage residents with a focus on touch, smell and sound. In addition, the team are also working on a menu adapted to the theme. Everybody at the home has contributed to the creation of this sensory experience, with everyone having spent time crafting their own props to add to the diorama. “To some it’s just decoration, but to us it makes us ‘part of Ariel’s world,’” said the service manager.
In the conservatory, the team have utilised an array of colour and variety of themed objects, many of which have been suspended and creatively positioned. Residents are encouraged to explore the many textures of the sea, bubbles, rocks and Ursula’s tentacles, and take in the aroma of the seaside from the shells, driftwood and other objects. There is also an Ariel, the centrepiece of the experience, which is positioned on a magical box, and tells the story of the Little Mermaid.
Louise Remmer, Colleague Engagement Lead, has selected Progress House as Priory’s Site of the Month. “The reason I chose this service was it blew me away! The level of care was fantastic; they really showed how they brought Priory Values in to their daily role,” said Louise, “I spoke with one service user who told me how much he loved living at Progress House. He said the team were extremely kind to him and he enjoyed the different themes and activities they have every week.”
