A care home in Bournemouth, The Piers, has been rated 'good' overall and in all categories by the care watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In its report, inspectors said: "There was a calm relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the house. We saw positive caring interactions between staff and people."

A family member of a relative emailed inspectors and described staff as "gentle and kind, upbeat and patient, encouraging and empathetic and aware". Another relative said: "The current manager is hardworking and totally committed to the welfare of my family member. I have complete trust in them to do the right thing." The CQC also received "very positive" feedback from local commissioners.

Inspectors said that staff "understood people's complex and sensory needs". For instance, one resident has specialist sensory equipment in his bedroom.

Residents are supported to take part in a wide range of activities, which include swimming, walking, visiting farms, trampolining, horse riding and travelling.

The Piers supports people with autism and learning disabilities aged 18 and over. It is located in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Trevor Griffin, Acting Site Manager, said: "We are all so delighted with this report. It makes fabulous reading. Everyone who lives here is making great progress, and long let that continue."

Jonathan Harker, Operations Director of South West/Wales of Craegmoor, said: "Relatives and commissioners are very positive about The Piers and the impact it is having on the resident's lives. The staff at the home work very hard and they deserve great credit for this achievement."
