Gary has received glowing feedback from his voluntary job at a community centre

Gary, a resident of High Cross House, has been embracing new opportunities to enrich his life and support his local community. High Cross House is one of Priory’s residential services, supporting adults who are autistic or have a learning disability. The home encourages residents to explore new avenues for personal growth; for Gary, this meant taking on a voluntary role at The Hub community centre in nearby Fenton.

Gary works at The Hub three days a week, where his responsibilities range from preparing meals and beverages to assisting community members. The Hub serves as an essential sanctuary for the local community, offering advice, activities, and a variety of support services. Gary said: "My job at The Hub is wonderful. Everybody is friendly and nice. I like helping out.”

According to Carole Kind, who is the manager of The Hub, Gary is much more than just a volunteer: “Gary has become an integral part of the team at The Hub. He sets out activities, prepares meals, and makes numerous pots of tea and coffee! He is willing to undertake any task, both large and small. Besides his valuable contribution, the responsibility has greatly improved Gary's self-confidence. His easy-going, friendly personality is very much appreciated by everyone who attends The Hub."

Securing this role has not only helped Gary become an integral part of the local community, but also boosted his self-confidence. The responsibilities Gary has taken on in this role have enabled him to develop his independence in the community, and his support team couldn’t be prouder of him.

Daniel Stone, Registered Manager at High Cross House said: “Gary is very enthusiastic about his work at The Hub. The centre provides essential advice and support to members of the local community. We are very proud of Gary; he does a great job."
