Priory Adult Care (formerly Amore Care) has further invested in its care services in Northern Ireland with the opening of Apple Mews, a specialist learning disability and mental health facility in Armagh.

Apple Mews has been developed to provide care for up to 30 adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex physical disabilities.

It will provide nursing care and a range of programmes to support the development of independence and life skills. Residents will also have access to daily activities including arts, music, education, sensory and outdoor activities. The homely and comfortable environment has been designed to enable person-centred care and to assist people who cannot live in their own homes to maintain as much independence as possible.

Apple Mews will provide appropriate services, in a community-based setting, for individuals who may otherwise be living in a long-stay hospital. This reflects the ethos of the Bamford Review, an independent review set up in 2002 to look at the law, policy and provisions which affect people with mental health needs or a learning disability in Northern Ireland. The Review states that no-one with a learning disability should live permanently in a long-stay hospital.

Deborah Oktar-Campbell, operations director for Amore Care in Northern Ireland, said: “The Apple Mews facility will meet the needs of adults with a complex range of learning difficulties and mental health problems. It has been well received by healthcare professionals, particularly in light of the specialist services it provides for Northern Ireland.

“The bungalows have been developed and furnished to the highest specification to ensure residents feel completely at home and relaxed. Apple Mews provides an environment that encourages residents to lead an independent life, providing the right level of support to enable them to accomplish this.”
