Oaklands care home in Derby has been rated as 'good' for the quality of care it provides by the independent health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Oaklands provides support to people with mental health requirements.

In its report, which follows a recent inspection, the CQC praised Oaklands for having an "open and inclusive approach to people's care and support" and being "committed to meeting the needs of people and improving their sense of wellbeing".

The people supported by the home spoke highly of staff. One resident said, "It's friendly here". Another person said, "It's given me back my confidence. I now go out independently, for me that's such a change, it's given me a new look on life".

A resident said to inspectors about staff: "They're great, always listen and encourage me." Another resident said, "The staff supported me all the way; they are good at listening and encourage me, reminding me of the goals I have set myself".

Residents keep in regular contact with their relatives and some are involved with volunteering in the local community, including in local shops and at an allotment. They go on a range of day trips and holidays, including to museums and regional attractions. A resident recently went on a break to the Isle of Wight.

The home truly understands the needs of the individual. A resident told inspectors about staff, "They are not judgemental; they get it, understand why each day can be different for me and know what I need". The CQC praised the fact that "people's care plans were reflective of their culture, gender and spiritual beliefs". Resident's birthdays are celebrated and they share information about each other on a 'hot gossip board' displayed on a wall.

Tracy Cox, Registered Manager, said: "We are delighted with this report. It is so pleasing to read these really positive comments. We will keep up the good work.
