Gateholme care home in Old Bradford Road, Carr Gate, Wakefield, has been praised by independent inspectors for the quality of care it offers to residents with learning and physical disabilities.

In its latest report, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates health and care services, praised Gateholme for “being caring”, “very approachable, holding “your voice” meetings and for its innovative use of “hospital passports”.

Hospital passports enable the care home to pass on information to healthcare professionals easily so that residents have their needs and preferences fully taken into account when being treated by doctors who may not know them.

The CQC quotes a resident saying “staff listen to me. I can choose where I want to go”.

Another said that “all of the staff, every single one of them, are excellent.”

The inspectors praised the fact that “staff know people well…people responded to staff by talking and laughing”.

The report praises the level of personalised support offered, and how residents are able to have their rooms decorated to their individual tastes. The home is proactive in organising leisure activities, including regular visits from local music entertainers. The home was also proactive in giving residents the opportunity to pursue their personal interests. “One person was attending a computer class on the day of the inspection”.
