Carnival fun: Residents promote Priory out in the community

Residents at Priory Adult Care service Egerton Road have been out and about in the community at Bexhill Carnival to promote the home they live in. The event is one of Bexhill’s longest running and biggest events of the year, providing a week of free events for the community.

Egerton Road is located in the town of Bexhill-on-Sea, right in the heart of the town. The service is one of our Brain Injury Services, providing specialist residential support to individuals with an acquired brain injury (ABI), as well as other neurological conditions. The service is rated ‘Good’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and across all areas of inspection. The CQC report for Egerton Road notes that the people that live there are encouraged to “make use of community activities that enable them to socialise and integrate into the community they live in.”

Egerton Road residentsIndeed, during the carnival event, the enthusiastic residents donned their Priory t-shirts and went out to talk to the people attending the event. The group, supported by members of staff at the home, began their trip out just outside the service, which is located just a stone’s throw away from the site of the carnival. They then made their way to the nearby scenic waterfront.

Throughout the day, the residents got stuck in with handing out balloons and leaflets to help promote the service. They also chatted with members of the community about their rehabilitation plan at Egerton Road, and the activities they get involved with at the home. One resident talked about how he is supported to go to the gym, venture out on days trips, and participate in voluntary work, and how this support is helping him to gain independence and take steps towards his goal of living independently in the community.

Egerton Road residents at Bexhill CarnivalDeputy Manager Amber Day noted that many people in the carnival procession spotted the purple Priory t-shirts, recognised the service, and interacted positively with the group. The town crier, who was part of the parade, even noticed the residents and gave out a shout-out to them, saying, “Big up the Priory!”, to which the crowd cheered. This recognition was greatly appreciated by staff and residents alike. Amber noted,

“It was a really lovely, positive way to get the residents involved in the community. It was nice that they were recognised by the public, and that everyone was happy.”

“It’s the best place I’ve ever worked at. It’s very homely for the residents, and the staff are really happy and friendly. The residents love doing things in the community, it’s really nice.”

Everyone from the home who attended the event thoroughly enjoyed their day out, and were delighted at the warm reception they had received from the local community. One resident commented, “I loved handing out balloons and speaking to people about our home, it was a good day.” Another said, “I enjoyed meeting and talking to people.”

Support Worker Judit Padar, who spent the day out with the household for the carnival, stated, “It was really nice to see our residents being excited about the carnival, talking to members of the public, handing out the balloons and leaflets enjoying letting members of the public know about their lives and home at the Priory.”

Registered Manager, Kaidy Astell agreed, stating, “It was great to see the service users involved with promoting the site and actively helping out with recruitment in the local community.”
