Residents attend colleges and spend time at leisure and day centres

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) was full of praise for a local care home. Its inspector highlighted the “good understanding” staff have with the residents they support.

Devonshire Road was rated ‘good’ overall and in each care category: “Is the service safe”, effective”, “caring”, “responsive” and “well-led”.

In the report, the inspector said: “People were observed to be happy and content living at Devonshire Road. Some people have been living at the home in excess of 20 years. One person told us, ‘I am very happy here’. The same person told us that care staff were ‘caring’. We observed that not only had people established caring and positive relationships with each other but with the care staff that supported them.”

The CQC went on to say, “Care staff knew the people they supported really well. We observed positive interactions between people and care staff which were based on mutual respect and understanding. Care staff also had a good understanding of people’s personalities and behaviours and were able to support them accordingly and in a way which promoted positive well-being.”

Staff were proactive in encouraging residents to take part in activities that they enjoy. The inspector said, “People attended day centres, colleges and the leisure centre. People also took part in ad-hoc activities such as knitting, therapies, beauty treatments, shopping, going out for lunch, reflexology and board games. The service also planned and took people on an annual holiday of which we saw several photos that had been taken.”

Devonshire Road supports people with learning disabilities and autism and is located in Palmers Greens, north London. The home is managed by Priory Adult Care, a division within the renowned , the mental healthcare specialists.

Eija Sinitalo-Nunes, Registered Manager at Devonshire Road, said: “I am really pleased with this report and the great things that the inspector said about our staff. My staff team work really hard for our residents so I am pleased that the CQC highlighted the positive relationships they have built with them.”

Hayden Knight, Managing Director for the South East at Priory Adult Care: “It is great news that Devonshire Road has been rated ‘good’ by the CQC. Eija and her team do excellent things for the residents and I am thrilled they have got recognition for this in this very positive report.”
