Prince’s Trust volunteers and adults with learning difficulties have worked together to create a haven for residents at a Melton Mowbray care home.

The 26 volunteers decided they could help Mar Lodge, in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, after visiting a number of potential projects and assessing which would benefit local people most.

Mark Lilley, Manager of Mar Lodge, which is owned by Priory Adult Care, said: “The team chose to decorate Mar Lodge’s conservatory for the benefit of our residents. They felt the project would be most beneficial to the people of Mar Lodge and we are grateful for all their hard work.

“The Trust volunteers asked our service users what they would like and what they were interested in.  “In the end, they came up with a design that everyone was happy with and each of our service users decorated a canvas for the wall. Together, we also have created a comfortable seating area and hung fairy lights. It really is a delightful place and one which very many are enjoying using.”

The Prince’s Trust Melton Team 5 raised £325 to pay for the project. B&M Installations donated a carpet and King Road Carpet Shop donated a rug.

Since then, another team of Prince’s Trust volunteers has raised money and sourced materials to rejuvenate the rear garden at Mar Lodge.

Laura Henderson, Prince’s Trust Team Leader said: “Our young people gained a lot from working at Mar Lodge and firm friendships have been forged. This was a very positive experience for everyone involved.”

Mar Lodge supports adults with learning difficulties who need help to develop life and social skills with the aim of them becoming as independent as possible. Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team focusing on the needs of the individual.

The home aims to encourage individuals and families to actively participate in the planning of support and also works closely with local services such as the community learning disability team, community nurses, psychologists, speech therapists, local health centres, dental, chiropody and other health care services.
