Bowden House care home for adults with long term mental health issues in South Yorkshire has been rated 'good' for the quality of care it provides by the independent health and social care regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The service was rated 'good' for all categories - for being 'safe', 'effective', 'caring', 'responsive' and 'well-led', within the overall rating.

Gary Millard, Craegmoor area manager, said the report was "great news" as this was the home's first inspection since it opened in 2015.

Another related care home - Bowden Lodge - has subsequently opened nearby, offering similarly high quality services.

In the report, following the inspection at Bowden House in Sheffield, the CQC praised Bowden House staff for the ways in which they delivered support and care to residents effectively, whilst encouraging wellbeing and individuality: "Staff were kind and respectful towards people ensuring privacy and independence was promoted."

It was also noted that staff allowed residents to make their own choice about their care and offered advice where needed, stating: "People were involved in writing their support plans and contributing to their risk assessments."

Bowden House offers a wide range of activities which are managed by a full-time activities co-ordinator. These include cooking and baking, barbecues and discos, day trips and holidays. Residents are also encouraged to suggest ideas at regular group meetings, with support from staff to help them to identify their own interests and pursue these activities - whether within the house or within the local community.

Paige Berry, General Manager, said: "We are thrilled with the outcome of our latest CQC inspection as we have all worked incredibly hard to ensure that our residents are able to lead a safe and independent lifestyle. Everyone who has been involved in creating the encouraging environment we promote in our home should feel very proud to have been recognised positively by the CQC during this inspection."

Sarah Hughes, CEO of Craegmoor, added: "Craegmoor is very pleased that Bowden House has been rated 'good' overall. It is great that the CQC holds the service in such a high regard, particularly in ensuring that the service offers an individualised and person centred approach."
