A Priory Dementia Coach discusses Alzheimer's disease, and the services Priory provides to support people living with Alzheimer's

Transcript

Hello, my name is Donna Hanlon and I support Priory sites with dementia-related training, questions and support. For this Alzheimer's Awareness Month, I wanted to do something a little bit different, and provide you with information about who I am and what Priory can offer.

I often get asked what the difference is between Alzheimer's and Dementia, and I think the Alzheimer's Society sum it up nicely. According to the Alzheimer's Society, dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain, and Alzheimer's disease is the most common of these.

Dementia is the name given for a group of symptoms that commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem-solving, language and perception. Here at Priory we can offer support by way of specialised environments, which enable people to remain as independent and active as possible.

We support our residents through the provision of therapeutic interventions such as music therapy, doll therapy, pet therapy, horticultural therapy and many others, which are put on by our dedicated activity teams. We also have trained professionals who receive accredited dementia training through our Creative Minds program, which equips them to understand how to support somebody living with dementia.

At our Dementia Plus services, we also offer NAPPI training, which stands for Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention training that supports a more positive behaviour support approach. This helps people to live their lives in the least restrictive way possible, to encourage and support wellbeing.

We currently have a number of Dementia Plus sites where we can support people who are living with more complex behavioural needs. At these sites we are implementing a Designated Dementia Champion scheme, where our Champions will provide on-site support to families and colleagues, as well as being the point of contact for coaching and mentoring sessions.
