Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their family homes, where they wish to. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported. For those who are unable to visit their family home, we can support your loved ones with video calls.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit. Family and friends are welcome to join in events such as barbecues, celebrating birthdays and other annual celebrations.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we are happy to keep family members involved in the care of their loved one, where appropriate and with their consent or deemed in their best interest. We are happy to discuss on an individual basis the best way to keep families involved.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Some residents have their own mobile phones and are able to maintain contact themselves. We have landlines with portable phones so that residents can also use these. We also support with making phone calls and video calls, where required.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. We will support individuals to bring their own furniture and personal belongings where possible to make their room their own space that they can feel comfortable in.

Are external doors kept locked?

Our doors are not locked. Residents can leave and return freely, or as agreed in their individual support plans. We only lock the doors and gate at night, for security reasons.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents living in the flats do their own budgeting and preparing of food, with support from our staff. People living in the bedrooms are able to prepare their own breakfasts, lunch and snacks, again with support as needed. The main meal is usually prepared by our staff, but residents are encouraged to participate where they wish. Our residents are fully involved in menu planning and we have a rolling menu, which is regularly reviewed. We are able to support special dietary requirements and provide alternatives, where they are requested.

How does laundry work?

We have a utility room with laundry facilities, which residents make use of either independently or with support from our staff. Our team will ensure that residents always have access to clean clothes and bedding.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Residents are encouraged to participate in their activities of daily living, and this will be outlined in their support plans. Westfield House also has a housekeeper and maintenance worker on-site, and support staff, who provide assistance with these tasks.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We would discuss general items on an individual basis depending on risks and mental capacity. Alcohol consumption within the home will also be discussed on an individual basis. We cannot allow non-approved drugs and medications.

How do activities work?

Many people are able to access the community and can choose activities they participate in. We will work with each person to understand their goals and hobbies, and our activity co-ordinator will plan activities within the home and trips out, with input from residents. There are daily activities available daily and available to everyone, if they choose to join in.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. We have behavioural care plans, which reflect this approach. We also use a traffic light system, where needed, on an individual basis.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

We work with our residents and their care team to develop support plans through assessments and pre-admission discussions. Where appropriate, and with consent or where it is deemed in the individual's best interest, we are happy to involve family members in developing their care plans. They are reviewed on a regular basis and updated as needed.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is ample off-road parking at Westfield House.

What is the smoking policy?

We do not permit smoking indoors, and this includes vapes. However, there is a designated smoking area with a shelter within the grounds, which residents can use freely.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
