Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at Udal Garth has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, managing finances and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches include positive behaviour support (PBS), delivered in-house. We also have close links with a local multidisciplinary team to provide any other support for our residents. The lengths of the placements that we offer at Udal Garth can be medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

Some of our residents go home for a home visit on a Saturday or a Sunday. They have their set routine and this works well for them. At Easter, in summertime and at Christmas, some residents go home for an overnight stay and one of the people we care for goes on a caravan holiday with his parents every summer. We do whatever we can to facilitate these visits.

Can friends and families visit?

Our families are welcome to visit if they wish to do so and if it works for our residents. Some people do not like their family here and others don’t mind. We have strong relationships with all our families.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

We encourage our parents to call anytime or if they have any concerns. We send photos of activities if they cannot make it to visit and we also have activity journals that all staff record activities in, including photos of their loved ones.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

We encourage our parents to call anytime or if they have any concerns. Our residents can always call their family too if they wish. We especially encourage this on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and Christmas. Loved ones can call or email any time and we also video call one family member who lives far away from the area.

What are the bedrooms like?

Residents are supported to decorate them however they want. We encourage people to bring personal items and furnishings, to make the space their own. Our team can assist by painting the room a colour of each residents’ choice.

Are external doors kept locked?

Our service is a locked door home. The external gates are locked and our home is set in its own grounds. Our residents’ safety is important to us, and some of our residents may be on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

There is a cook here every weekday lunch time and staff cook meals at the weekends, including breakfast time and evenings. There is always a healthy balanced menu available which includes all our resident’s favourite dishes. They have a large input into what they would like on the menu on a daily basis. We have a menu board displayed in the dining room, and everyone chooses what they would prefer from a choice of two balanced meals available that day. Our residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible and are supported to help with cooking, cleaning and shopping should they wish to do so.

How does laundry work?

Everyone is encouraged to do their own laundry daily with support. We have a washing machine in a separate laundry room, a washing line in the garden and a dryer in a spare drying room. This is incorporated into part of the daily routines.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Udal Garth has a housekeeper who works on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. She orders any cleaning products we need and deep cleans the house and external buildings when she is in. Our staff will also tidy and clean as and when needed. Residents are encouraged to hoover and mop, to change their own bedding, and to keep their own room tidy, if they are able to.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

This will be done as part of individual risk assessments. Items may be restricted for the safety of the people living here.

How do activities work?

We encourage the people we support to develop feelings of security and to form relationships with others in the immediate and the extended community. A lot of our activities are focused around the local community, and we encourage people to express their ideas about activities they’d like to do, so we can make this happen.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We have person-centred support plans for everyone staying with us. Our PBS practitioner creates behaviour support plans for each individual, should they need it. Staff have extensive training and will attend additional training should it be needed to support specific behaviours.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Our residents and their families are involved in all decision making and have a very strong input into their personalised support plans. We actively encourage involvement of families in supporting the person we are assisting and seek to involve them in discussions concerning their welfare.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is parking on the road outside Udal Garth and we have a drive with space for three cars.

What is the smoking policy?

None of our residents smoke at present but there is a designated smoking area situated around the side of the house for staff/visitors to use should they need to.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
