Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

Our residents are supported when they go to their family home for visits or to attend family events. To ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported, their key worker may come along on the visit.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit in our home and we encourage them to take part in our activities too. Advance notice is requested as some of our residents are anxious around people they don’t know. Overnight stays are not permitted.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

We are dedicated to keeping in regular contact with family members so they feel fully involved in the care of their loved ones. This can be either in person during their visits or by regular telephone calls.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

We have a landline and cordless phones so residents and families can keep in touch. Some of our residents are able to have their own mobile phone and everyone can call as often as they like.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes, with furnishings, colour palettes, and other décor items.

Are external doors kept locked?

Our external gates are kept locked for security reasons. Every resident will be risk assessed to determine the level of security needed and they are all welcome to wander in and out of our a large garden area and courtyard.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents are supported to choose their meals through the use of pictures. Our team will also seek guidance from family members and nutritionists to ensure that special dietary requirements are catered for. We support people to prepare food around their own schedule, and can supply snacks and beverages for between meals, too.

How does laundry work?

Our team will ensure that residents always have access to clean clothes and bedding.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Our staff undertake domiciliary tasks such as cleaning.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Please do not bring valuables such as family heirlooms to our home, as we cannot guarantee their safety. We may place restrictions on some items where the risks cannot be appropriately managed, such as non-approved drugs and medications, solvent-based products and lighters.

How do activities work?

Everyone we care for has a personal activities planner. They can choose from a range of in-house activities as well as community pursuits. Their key worker may use a variety of communication tools to ensure the resident can have an input into the planning of activities.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Turketel Road has a PBS practitioner, who supports residents with their behavioural needs. In addition, we use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed frequently, for example procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we work with residents, social workers and family members to develop care plans which are in the best interests of our residents. We use a variety of communication tools and work with health professionals to aid each resident in having a say about every aspect of their care. Care plans are regularly reviewed, and family members will be asked for their input.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is space for three cars and on-street free parking.

What is the smoking policy?

Our home is a non-smoking environment, smoking must occur outside of the building, and this also includes vapes.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
