The Wheelhouse is a small home located in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex within a short distance of the main town centre and seafront. We are registered to support up to four adults who have a learning disability, communication difficulties and may have autism and present with behaviours that challenge.
Our approach to care
Our professional and friendly staff team, who are trained on a continuous basis, offer support and choice for adults with severe learning disabilities, communication difficulties and autism. We aim to enable everyone living at The Wheelhouse to lead an independent life, wherever possible.
Positive reinforcement and a high staff ratio provide opportunities for individuals to develop their daily living skills, supported by the philosophy of gentle teaching. The service we deliver is based on the belief of individuals' rights and choices.
All individuals are involved in designing their own Person Centred Plan, with staff support. The plans are tailored to suit individual needs and provide the correct level of support required. They also enable all individuals to make their own choices about the support they receive. We encourage and support people to recognise and identify their goals and ambitions and how they would like to go about meeting them.
The views and opinions of each individual are paramount to their ownership of the support they receive and are sought by alternative communication methods such as Makaton, PECS and through the use of objects of reference – these are always acted upon.
“People were being spoken with and supported in a sensitive, respectful and professional manner.”
