Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at The Gables has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, finances and budgeting and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches at The Gables include:

We also have support from a local multidisciplinary team to offer these services and additional therapeutic input, including a GP and community teams. In addition, we use tools such as the Outcomes Star™, including the Recovery Star, to support our residents to achieve their goals.

The lengths of the placements that we offer at The Gables can be transitional, short-term, medium-term or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their family homes, where they wish to. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit. Visits are usually planned in advance to support individual needs. Unfortunately, family members cannot stay overnight. We have a quiet room where residents can have privacy with their family away from the communal areas where needed. Family and friends are welcome to join in events at The Gables, such as barbecues, birthday parties and other celebrations.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we strive to keep the loved ones of our residents involved in their care, where this is in line with the resident’s wishes or their best interests. We are happy to discuss on an individual basis the best way to keep families involved, and this may include visits, photos being sent via email, or regular catch-ups via the phone.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Everyone who stays with us are supported to call their loved ones any time, via phone or video call. Family and friends are also able to call as often as they like. Most of our residents have their own mobile phones unless there are any restrictions around this and are able to maintain contact themselves.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. We will support individuals to bring their own furniture and personal belongings where possible to make their room their own space that they can feel comfortable in.

Are external doors kept locked?

Due to the nature of the support offered at The Gables, we have locked external doors. However, residents are able to leave the home freely, using the keypad access code. We have a large enclosed garden area and external gates which are also locked with a keypad access door.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

We have a weekly menu plan which changes every week and is developed with residents’ input and choices. We often have themed nights and encourage people staying with us to get involved in cooking different types of food. We also offer alternatives where they are requested and support people to make their own alternative meal. Special dietary requirements are also catered for.

There is a separate kitchen where the people who live here can make their own drinks and snacks throughout the day. People who are living in the flats have their own budget to purchase food and make their meals independently or with support from our staff. They are also welcome to join in communal meal times, too, if they wish.

How does laundry work?

The Gables has a utility room with laundry facilities, where residents are given help to do their own laundry, as part of their activities of daily living. Our staff are on hand to offer support if and when it is required, and our team will ensure that residents always have access to clean clothes and bedding.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

The main housekeeping tasks are carried out by our housekeeper. However, staff support and encourage our residents to complete other domiciliary tasks, to promote their independence, in line with their support plans.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We are unable to support people bringing alcohol or non-approved drugs in to The Gables. We would discuss any other items on an individual basis.

How do activities work?

Activities are planned according to our residents’ choices and interests. Each person has their own activity plan and residents are encouraged to make suggestions for group activities either at The Gables and out in the community.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. Alongside this, each person has a traffic light system within their care plans. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed and reviewed frequently. Procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we encourage families and extended support providers to be involved with the care plans, where this is in line with the resident’s wishes or best interests. Each resident will be involved at every stage of their support planning, where possible, and care and support will be reviewed on a regular basis, and updated as needed.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is ample off-road parking available here at The Gables.

What is the smoking policy?

We do not permit smoking indoors, and ask residents to smoke by the designated smoking area in the garden, which has a shelter. Residents are able to buy cigarettes and vapes at the shops, if this is what they choose.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
