About this location

Riverbank is located in Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The service offers residential support for 24 males and females with mental health needs. We are located off a main road leading to the city centre and within walking distance of a beautiful park.

Our team are dedicated to supporting the people we care for to be able to live independently in the community, increasing their quality of life. Riverbank offers a step down service from hospital or locked rehabilitation units and also supports individuals who may require a step up from the community, in cases where more support may be needed to prevent relapse and potential hospital admission.

We can also support individuals with:

  • Complex needs
  • A forensic background
  • A dual diagnosis, with a secondary diagnosis of a learning disability or those on the autism spectrum

About our service

Our facilities and environment

Riverbank is a purpose-built building which opened in 2012, with lots of space and offering a relaxed, homely environment. It has large communal areas, including extensive gardens and a bistro which residents and their visitors can enjoy on a daily basis.

There are three floors, with bedrooms across the first and second floor, accessible via our lift.

In summary, we offer:

We also have well-maintained gardens, complete with:

  • Secure fencing
  • Patio

We also have specialised equipment within the home, such as a lift, and ramps leading up to the entrance to provide wheelchair access.

Our bedrooms

All of our bedrooms are comfortable, welcoming and can be personalised to individual tastes. Our bedrooms provide a double size bed and come with furniture and cabinets, and an en-suite shower room.

Each bedroom has large windows overlooking the beautiful grounds, and half the bedrooms have their own kitchenette area to enable residents to gain valuable life skills. This includes a refrigerator, freezer, sink, and induction hob system. They are designed to promote independence, whilst still retaining a homely feel.

Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at Riverbank has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches at Riverbank include positive behaviour support (PBS). We also have support from a local multidisciplinary team, to support with any therapeutic input required. In addition, we use tools such as the Outcomes Star™ to support our residents to achieve their goals.

The lengths of the placements that we offer at Riverbank can be medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Activities

Everyone who lives at Riverbank has their own personalised activities planner and are encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. Our dedicated team organise a variety of activities at the home, as well as out in the community.

We focus on supporting our residents to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities in the local community. Our convenient location in the heart of Hull means our residents can access these kinds of opportunities with ease.

  • Those who pose a risk to others in communal living areas
  • Those with active, significant self-harm risks
  • Those who pose a risk of property damage
  • Those with ongoing alcohol dependency issues

Pathways

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which help the people we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.

We can support people who are moving into our home from secure settings. We can also support people moving into their own homes either on our site or in the community through our Priory Supported Living Hull & East Riding services.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

Riverbank is an open-door service, which means residents can come and go as they please. Our staff promote therapeutic relationships and encourage people staying with us to visit their family and friends.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit any time. We have a number of communal areas with refreshments to make visits as enjoyable as possible.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we strive to keep the loved ones of our residents involved in their care. Each individual staying with us is able to give consent if they choose for information to be shared with their loved ones. We believe this has a positive impact on the people staying with us.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Everyone who stays with us are supported to contact their loved ones any time, via phone, video call, email, or post. Family and friends are also able to call as often as they like. We have landlines to facilitate this, although many of our residents have their own mobile phones, subject to a risk assessment which they are able to use independently.

What are the bedrooms like?

Our modern facilities offer light, airy rooms with double beds, en-suite shower facilities and plenty of storage. Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to decorate and personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. Some bedrooms have their own kitchenettes, to promote independence.

Are external doors kept locked?

No, residents are able to leave the home whenever they would like to via the front door. However, only staff and residents can access the building from the community and our garden gates are locked for their security and safety.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

We offer a wide range of meals three times a day, with a choice of meat and vegetarian options. Our home cooked meals are provided by our wonderful on-site bistro. To promote the independence of our residents, we also offer one-to-one cooking sessions in each of the bedrooms, based on residents’ choice. Throughout each day snacks and drinks are available at all times.

How does laundry work?

Riverbank has its own laundry facilities on-site, where residents are given help to do their own laundry, as part of promoting independence. Our staff are on hand to offer support if and when it is required.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Staff support and encourage our residents to complete these tasks, to promote their independence. This will be outlined in their support plans. We also have a dedicated housekeeper at the home to maintain the general cleanliness of the facilities, particularly the communal spaces.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We maintain a medication dispensing system to keep medication stored daily, and do not permit unauthorised medications. We may place restrictions on smoking materials if there is an increased risk of residents smoking indoors, as this is against our policy.

How do activities work?

Activities are planned according to our residents’ choices and interests. We have a number of daily activities and each resident is also encouraged to take part in activities of their choice during one-to-one sessions such as going out in the community. We also have regular group activities such as our six-a-side service football team for both residents and staff.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We work proactively with our residents to support their needs on a daily basis. We use verbal de-escalation strategies to minimise any physical interventions. Pro re nata (PRN) medication is used only as a last resort when necessary, and is not regularly promoted by our staff.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Riverbank encourage residents to develop their own care and support plans as part of our person-centred approach. Our staff support people staying with us to create and action these plans and they are reviewed monthly with both staff and residents to ensure best practice is maintained.

What are the car parking facilities?

We have a car park for everyone using the home that can be locked. This is for staff, residents and visitors.

What is the smoking policy?

For health and safety reasons, Riverbank operate a no smoking indoors policy, and smoking checks may be practiced if required to minimise risks. However, we do provide a smoking area in the garden for residents who wish to smoke, and this can be accessed at any time.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
