About this location

Coral House is located between Poole and Bournemouth on the south coast of Dorset. Our home offers residential support for seven males and females with a variety of needs. This includes people on the autism spectrum, individuals with a learning disability, and those who have a physical disability and/or dementia.

We are located in a quiet suburb, close to beautiful beaches and great coastal walks. Our team are dedicated to working with integrity, ensuring that the people we care for are at the very heart of what we do. We work positively towards achieving people’s hopes and aspirations, striving for excellence in all that we do.

About our service

Our facilities and environment

The two neighbouring bungalows are adjacent to each other, with a beautiful open garden at the rear. There are a total of seven bedrooms, all on the ground floor. One is a self-contained annexe, and two have en-suite facilities. Many have large bay windows, basking the rooms in excellent light.

Both bungalows have a variety of communal areas. Coral one has an open-plan kitchen and conservatory/dining area. Coral two has a separate large kitchen shared by residents in the bungalow and the annexe.

We also have specialised equipment within the home, such as hoists and low-level kitchen counters. In addition, we have two site vehicles, which can accommodate two wheelchair users and seating for six people, to help us to meet the needs of the individuals we support.

Our bedrooms

All of our bedrooms are comfortable, welcoming and can be personalised to individual tastes. Two of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities, containing either a shower, a bath or a wet room. All our bedrooms have wheelchair access and robust, low arousal furniture.

Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at Coral House has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, managing finances and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches at Coral House include aromatherapy and podiatry. We also have support from a local multidisciplinary team to provide healthcare and support services to the people who live here. In addition, we use tools such as the Outcomes Star™ to support our residents to achieve their goals. The lengths of the placements that we offer at Coral House can be medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Our team are committed to providing the support required for our residents to enjoy the best possible quality of life. We have recently been awarded a Level 1 Self-Certification accreditation from the DSDC in Environments for Aging and Dementia Design, meeting all 6 of the tools domains.

Activities

Everyone who lives at Coral House has their own personalised activities planner and are encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. Our dedicated team organise a variety of activities at the home, as well as out in the community.

In the community, residents participate in activities such as bowling, cinema, swimming and trampolining, as well as walks in nature, visiting local attractions such as the Oceanarium, Monkey World, The Tank Museum or further afield like Marwell Zoo and local events. In the past, we have attended Thai Food Festival, Bournemouth Air Show, Poole and Bournemouth Fire Works and Christmas lights, among many others.

We also focus on supporting our residents to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities.

Coral House also observes a multitude of diversity and inclusion days, as well as national and international holidays, which complement our diverse staff team. Many residents enjoy craft activities, and these are often themed around the calendar dates, and we decorate our home accordingly. Food-based activities are firm favourites, whether that be baking or preparing meals.

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which help the people we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.

We support people to develop their independent living skills with a view to helping them to move into their own home in the community through supported living, where appropriate.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their family homes. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported. This may mean the individual’s key worker will come along on the visit.

Can friends and families visit?

Our service welcomes family and friend visits. We encourage visits to be between 10am and 4pm where possible, but we can still accommodate in cases where the visit was to be outside of these hours.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes - we strive to keep the loved ones of our residents involved in their care. We will agree how and when people would like updates and welcome people to visit regularly. We can provide updates regularly via phone, face-to-face at the home, or via virtual meetings.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Everyone who stays with us will be supported to call their loved ones any time, via phone or video call. Family and friends are also able to call as often as they like.

What are the bedrooms like?

Each resident has their own room, with the only shared access being bathrooms/wet rooms and communal areas. All bedrooms come furnished with a bed and furniture, which includes a bedside table, chest of drawers and a wardrobe.

Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms to their own specifications, including room colour, putting up pictures and arranging furniture in a way that they choose. Should a resident and their family wish to bring their own furniture, bed or furnishings, then they are able to do this freely, and our team can support with this and any personalisation.

Are external doors kept locked?

The service does have a locked door, which can only be opened by a key-fob for both entry and exit. This prevents unwanted visitors from gaining access and ensures the safety of our residents who then are able to leave the service with the support of staff.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents choose their menus through ‘Our Voice’ and key worker meetings. All meals are made fresh daily and where possible, residents are encouraged to be a part of the meal preparations. We have a dining area in our conservatory where residents come together to eat their meals, with their individual care needs being met where additional support is required.

How does laundry work?

The service has its own laundry room, separate to other facilities in the home. Each individual resident has their clothing laundered separately. Residents are encouraged to participate in tending to their laundry, as well as other domestic tasks, however, for those where this is not possible, staff are on hand daily to launder clothing and perform housekeeping chores. Weather permitting, residents’ laundry is aired outdoors, supporting our greener pledge.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Staff support our residents based on their level of needs in relation to housekeeping. We encourage people to be as independent as possible and engage in these activities, where they can. Our care team support them with these tasks, and task allocation is also discussed in our monthly resident meetings.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We may place restrictions on some items where the risks cannot be appropriately managed, but this will be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Residents have an inventory of their belongings and these are not considered communal items. As new items are brought into the service they are signed onto the inventory.

How do activities work?

Our residents all enjoy a varied activity programme with a service-appointed activities co-ordinator, who is one of our staff members. Every weekend residents are supported to plan their upcoming week with activities that they wish to do. Sometimes this is a group activity and other times is person-specific. Activities are held both in-house and in the community, and residents have input into every aspect of their activities planner.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

At Coral House we use a least restrictive approach, where there are behavioural needs we use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. We focus on really understanding the individual needs of the people we support, and putting in place the support needed to meet these needs.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Where appropriate, family is actively encouraged to be involved in the lives of those we support. They are experts by experience and we value their insights into how best to deliver support. We work with social workers, family members and residents to develop care plans which are in the best interests of our residents. We use a variety of communication tools and work with health professionals to aid each resident in having a say about every aspect of their care.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is off road parking at the front of Coral one on the drive. In the event that this is full, a short walk away, less than 100 meters, there is parking on road to one side of the property and a small free car park to the other side.

What is the smoking policy?

At Coral House there is no smoking allowed within the building at any time. Although we make every effort to support people to live smoke-free, there is an allocated area outside where people can smoke, should they wish to.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
