Laura Prothero is the Registered Manager at Caerlan. This is what Laura has to say about the service and the staff team:
“At Caerlan we are committed to providing high quality person-centered services which promote the independence, choice and inclusion of the people we support.
We highlight the importance of people being supported and encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities, and staff ensure that people enjoy full and active lifestyles. This helps to increase social inclusion and to make sure that people with learning disabilities and complex have full access to the community resources, events and activities available. This in turn improves health and well-being and gives people the opportunity to strengthen their social networks and develop their confidence in social situations.
We believe that everyone has the potential to make decisions about their lives, and that Support Workers must be skilled in helping them to do this, regardless of a service user’s ability to communicate verbally. I expects all staff to ‘listen’ carefully at all times to service users and take appropriate action based upon their wishes, intentions and dreams.
All the staff working at Caerlan are trained in person-centred planning, working in person-centred ways, promoting rights and choices and developing person-centred plans with the service users. They are also supported to meet specialist communication needs so they can facilitate person-centered planning with service users who have little or no verbal communication, using communication techniques such as British Sign Language (BSL), Makaton, signalong and Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS).
Introducing Louise Quinn - PBS Practitioner at Caerlan
Louise’s role is to support and train the staff in positive behaviour practices. Louise will be based at Caerlan where she will deliver training which is designed exclusively around the needs of people. It emphasises prevention and proactive intervention in preference to physical intervention.
Louise graduated with a Degree in Psychology, has a Master’s Degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis and qualified as a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst in 2015.
Both Louise and Laura Prothero have over 20 years combined experience supporting individuals with complex challenging needs.
Laura specialises in autism and sensory needs and has developed many services resulting in positive outcomes. Laura and Louise have vast experience managing teams who support individuals with complex needs who can display challenging behaviour.
