Alphonsus House is located in Oldbury. Our service offers residential support for 19 males and females with a learning disability or mental health needs. The home is on a main road, near the town centre.

Our team are dedicated to supporting the people we care for to move back into their own homes in the community. We encourage our individuals to be active and the live the best life as possible, and allocated key workers to our individuals who support them to meet their goals and aspirations.

We can also support those who have physical disabilities.

About our service

Our facilities and environment

Alphonsus House is split across three houses and a bungalow on the grounds, surrounded by landscaped gardens. All the houses have communal lounges and dining rooms for residents to spend time together.

  • House 81 is a 4-bedded property for people with mental health needs. 2 of the rooms have en-suite facilities, including one with an en-suite toilet and washbasin. A ground floor bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a bath and a shower. On the first floor, there is an additional toilet and a communal bathroom.
  • Adjacent House 83 is 5-bedded and supports residents with a learning disability. 1 of the rooms is on the ground floor and has an en-suite. The remaining 4 bedrooms are on the first floor with a communal bathroom. There is also an additional toilet.
  • House 85, also has 5 bedrooms, and supports individuals with a learning disability. 1 of the rooms is on the ground floor and has an en-suite shower. There are a further 4 bedrooms on the first floor. 1 has its own toilet and a second has a toilet and a shower. There is an additional communal bathroom.
  • The bungalow has 5 en-suite bedrooms and is for people with a learning disability, who also have physical health needs.

All of our bedrooms are comfortable, welcoming and can be personalised to individual tastes. Our bedrooms have features such as:

  • En-suite facilities, containing either a shower, a bath or a wet room
  • Robust, low arousal furniture
  • Wheelchair access

Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at Alphonsus House has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, managing finances and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches at Alphonsus House include nursing and speech and language therapy. We also have support from a local multidisciplinary team. In addition, we use tools such as the Outcomes Star™ to support our residents to achieve their goals.

The lengths of the placements that we offer at Alphonsus House can be respite, short, medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Activities

Everyone who lives at Alphonsus House has their own personalised activities planner and are encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. Our dedicated team organise a variety of activities at the home, as well as out in the community.

We focus on supporting our residents to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities in the local community.

Pathways

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which help the people we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.

Here at Alphonsus House we work closely with Priory Supported Living West Midlands to support people to progress to their own tenancies, when they are ready.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents with home visits. Home visits need to be arranged in advance to enable us to plan and facilitate this.

Can friends and families visit?

At Alphonsus House we welcome all family members to visit, we do not require an appointment as we see our home as an open house, and family can visit any time of the day. We welcome family members to join and engage in any planned activity, this will be organised in advance to save any inconvenience.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we ask any loved ones of the resident when they move in to provide input into creating their support plan around their individual needs. We like to keep in contact regarding any changes that are made to the individuals care requirements, and we will report any concerns to family members.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Everyone who stays with us are supported to call their loved ones. We have four cordless phones that our residents are welcome to use at any time of the day. Staff will support those that need help in contacting their families.

What are the bedrooms like?

All bedrooms are furnished and are personalised to suit individual preferences. Our residents are welcome to change their décor if their needs and preferences change.

Are external doors kept locked?

Yes, due to the safety needs of our residents, the gates are locked, every resident will be risk assessed to determine the level of security needed which will give greater detail of what safety measures need to be put in place. Those residents who lack capacity will have best interest decisions put in place for their safety and for the safety of other residents.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

All our residents are supported each week with menu planning, this is usually done on a Wednesday. Residents will choose what meals they would like for the following week. On a Thursday our residents will then go to the local supermarket to purchase the food items with a member of staff. All our residents have their own food and fluid support plan that ensure any dietary requirements are considered.

How does laundry work?

Alphonsus House has access to three utility rooms, all staff ensure that our residents always have access to clean clothes. Some of our residents like to do their own washing and drying, this is encouraged to promote independence. Staff will support with the washing and drying of clothes for those that cannot do this on their own.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

We have a daily cleaning check-list book where all daily cleaning tasks are recorded. We ask our residents if they would like to participate in any of the domestic cleaning tasks. We encourage some of our residents to undertake the responsibility of ensuring that their rooms are clean and tidy. We do not have a housekeeper at site, all cleaning duties are undertaken by support staff to ensure that the home is clean and tidy.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal substances onto the premises.

How do activities work?

Everyone we care for has a tailored activities planner that is suited to their preferences. We also have a daily shift planner that will hand over what activities have been decided for that day by the individuals who live here. We encourage community integration, and support the people who live here to go out and about.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Those that require support with behaviour management will have their own behaviour support plan. Our skilled team work with people to understand their needs, and tailor the support provided to best meet these. We do not support severe behaviours that challenge at Alphonsus House.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we encourage families and residents to have an input into care plans at all levels. Residents are given choices about the support they receive, and their support plans will be amended to accommodate changes in needs.

What are the car parking facilities?

We have a small off road car park that has space for four cars, but staff and any visitors can park on the roadside. This is on the main road so all visitors will need to be made aware of this and will need to be vigilant, as at peak times this can be a very busy road.

What is the smoking policy?

We have designated smoking areas for residents that smoke, there are signs clearly displayed outside in back garden by house 81 and 83-85. Smoking and vaping is not permitted inside any of the houses.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
