Supporting an older person with dementia to live a more fulfilled life

Alice* arrived at Amberley House in 2015 requiring dementia and end of life care. Alice suffered with dementia, as well as being at high risk of falls and struggling with dietary and fluid intake.

How we have supported Alice

Before arriving at the home, Alice was previously in a Hospital setting. Amberley House staff worked closely with Alice’s family members and the Continuing Healthcare team to ensure Alice received the correct support from the moment she arrived at the home. Staff also worked with the key stakeholders on what Alice’s dietary preferences were as she was refusing meals in Hospital and losing weight. The kitchen staff at Amberley House cooked food to meet Alice’s taste needs and she has now regained and maintained her weight.

Staff also provided one-to-one support and decorated her room so it was feminine and homely to reassure Alice of her surroundings and reduce her anxiety.

Alice would often refuse medication due to her dementia, so staff worked closely with the local GP and provided Alice with liquid medication instead of tablets, and developed a covert plan to help Alice take the medication. This has really impacted on Alice’s quality of life in a positive way and her health needs.

Other outcomes since Alice joined Amberley House include Alice redeveloping and maintaining her social skills. Previously Alice was on a ward where she was isolated and didn’t speak with staff. She now participates in activities at the home including gardening and baking. Alice is also more mobile, seeking the companionship of other residents for chats.

Alice really has come a long way since arriving at Amberley House.
