About this location

Woodhouse Cottage is located in East Ardsley, in West Yorkshire. Our home offers residential support for six adult males, and they are cared for by a male-only team. This includes men with a learning disability and autistic men. We are in a semi-rural location, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Our team are dedicated to promoting independence, choice, dignity, empowerment, respect and opportunities and to support everyone to fulfil their potential. At Woodhouse Cottage, we support projects to engage and rehabilitate individuals, so they can do things that are meaningful to them, reducing the likelihood of them requiring forensic support in the future.

We can also support those who have mild to moderate behaviours that may challenge.

Comments from our residents and their family and friends

In my opinion it’s one of the best sites I’ve ever lived in and heard of. They allow you to live a life that you want

I want to thank you so much for your encouragement and that of your staff towards my son in his achieving his recent British Sign Language (BSL) certificate! It has made me very proud of him. I am sure this will be a big step in confidence-building and trying new things, and giving him satisfaction to see how he can use his skills to help others

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their family homes. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported. We promote independence by supporting residents to learn bus or train routes to family members’ addresses. For those who are unable to visit their family home, we can support your loved ones with video calls.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit. We request that visits give notice ahead of time, to allow us to risk assess, as required, and ensure our management team are available to say hello.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Family are encouraged to be very active in the support and are regularly updated. We hold regular meetings at the home with the families and the residents’ support team, where families can hear about recent happenings at the home. We can also arrange more regular catch-ups either in person or via telephone, to ensure families are kept informed.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Everyone who stays with us are supported to call their loved ones any time, via phone or video call. Family and friends are also able to call as often as they like. Some people can have their own mobile phones too, to call their loved ones, subject to a risk assessment.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. We want to make our residents are surrounded by things that make them happy.

Are external doors kept locked?

There is no locked key-pad and people are free to leave when they wish. There are no restrictions upon entering or exiting the building, other than for security reasons.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

The development of domestic skills is an important focus of activities at Woodhouse Cottage. One day a week, residents cook for everyone, with the support of our staff. If they don’t want to be involved in this, we still encourage them to cook their own meal on a one to one basis. One of our residents has even produced his own cook book. We also support residents if they want to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

How does laundry work?

Residents are given help to do their own laundry, as part of promoting independence. Our staff are on hand to offer support if and when it is required.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Staff support and encourage our residents to complete these tasks in their own space, to promote their independence. Cleaning responsibilities are allocated throughout the day, with staff and residents sharing this responsibility.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal or harmful substances onto the premises. We would also ask that people do not bring high risk personal items into the house.

How do activities work?

People staying at Woodhouse Cottage enjoy taking part in a range of activities, including going swimming, visiting the cinema, and shopping. We also organise day trips with the input of all of our residents and have group and individual activity plans. They are involved in the planning of all their activities.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Our staff ensure that proactive strategies are always embedded so people have focus to their day, and meaningful engagement. There are no requirements for any restrictive practices currently and all behaviours can be supported verbally with a dedicated team.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we encourage families and extended support providers to be involved with the care plans. We use a variety of communication tools to work collaboratively with the person we care for to co-produce the plans so they are tailored to their needs. We value this important input from others where appropriate.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is both on-road and off-road parking available at Woodhouse Cottage.

What is the smoking policy?

We have a designated area in the garden for residents to smoke or to vape, and they can be supported to purchase cigarettes at the shop, if this is what they choose. However, we do promote healthy lifestyles and can support residents with smoking cessation programmes.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
