Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We will make arrangements with residents and their families to support home leave.

Can friends and families visit?

Westbury Lodge is a welcoming environment for family and relatives, we encourage a phone call before visit to ensure our residents and their loved ones are in the house at times of visiting. We, as a promise, continue to support residents and families with regular communication and visits.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, families are provided with the opportunity to be involved in our residents’ care plans, care act assessments and health visits. The staff team will ensure family are updated with any changes in needs, safeguarding concerns or changes in health.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

We have a phone within the lobby which is accessible and portable to ensure residents can have privacy.

What are the bedrooms like?

All residents are encouraged and supported to personalise their bedrooms. Following an admission assessment, residents are able to pick colours for their bedroom and be involved in designing their bedroom.

Are external doors kept locked?

Yes, due to the risk of residents accessing the community unsupported, our doors are locked with key pads for their safety. Some of our residents are able to access the community independently, and they will be provided with the key pad codes.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents are encouraged to be involved within menu planning and alternatives are always offered. Meals are prepared to meet individual dietary requirements, following professionals’ advice. The staff are trained in dysphagia awareness, and diet and nutrition.

How does laundry work?

The laundry is communal and remains locked for safety. Residents are able to access the laundry room and complete their own laundry independently.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Residents are encouraged to be involved with the housekeeping and maintaining their personal spaces.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We would discuss this on their assessment and admission.

How do activities work?

Residents have tailored made activity plans which they are involved in planning, if they wish to be. We have ‘Our Voice’ meetings where group activities are discussed and planned. These might include trips to the beach or cinema. Activity plans are tailored to meet individual interests and needs.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed frequently, for example procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Our approach involves working alongside social workers, family members and residents to create care plans that truly serve the best interests of our residents. Through the use of a range of communication tools and co-ordination with healthcare professionals, we empower each resident to have a say in every aspect of their care. These care plans undergo regular reviews, and we actively welcome input from family members.

What are the car parking facilities?

The service has a driveway for parking.

What is the smoking policy?

We do not permit smoking in the building but we have a smoking shelter outside and a designated smoking area.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
