About this location

The Waves is located in the Parkstone area of Poole, in the county of Dorset. Our service offers residential support for one autistic male or female, who may also have a learning disability. We can also support someone who has communication difficulties, and conditions such as epilepsy.

The Waves is situated on a quiet street, near the town centre.

About our service

Our facilities and environment

The Waves is a detached bungalow, offering one ground floor bedroom. The home is tastefully decorated throughout and offers a homely, welcoming environment for our resident.

Our bedroom

Our bedroom is comfortable, welcoming and can be personalised to individual tastes. It has en-suite facilities and wheelchair access.

Our approach to support

The person we support at The Waves has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help the person in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as daily living skills, going out in the community, personal care, and household tasks such as cooking and cleaning.

Our team provides strengths-based person-centred support to our resident, as well as assistance with day-to-day activities. Our goal is to help our resident to develop as much independence as possible. We also use the Outcomes Star™ tool to recognise achievements and track individual goals.

The lengths of the placements that we offer at The Waves can be medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Activities

The person who lives at The Waves has their own personalised activities planner and is encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. Our dedicated team organise a variety of activities at the home, as well as out in the community.

We focus on supporting our resident to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities in the local community.

  • People under the age of 18
  • People with a mental health condition as a primary diagnosis

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which help the person we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

Residents can go home to family any time they wish. This can be with or without support, depending on the needs of the resident.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit and participate in activities within the home. However, we do ask that we are informed in advance of any visits.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we strive to keep the loved ones of our residents involved in their care. As well as visits from families, we also have a WhatsApp group where we can share photos and videos. Residents can also use Skype to call their loved ones.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Staff are available 24 hours a day to answer calls and put you in touch with your loved one. We can also support them to call you should they wish to.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished with en-suite bathrooms. Residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes.

Are external doors kept locked?

Due to the nature of the service, external entrances are locked. However, there is a spacious, enclosed garden area where residents can enjoy their surroundings and engage in sensory activities whenever they want to.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents are involved in the selection, purchase and preparation of their meals and snacks. We respond to suggestions from families as well as following guidelines outlined by medical professionals, if applicable. Specific dietary requirements or concerns may result in a referral to the speech and language therapy (SaLT) team in an effort to ensure each resident is recognised individually.

How does laundry work?

Residents are encouraged to complete laundry tasks as far as possible, as part of their daily living. In accordance with infection control guidelines, residents are encouraged and supported to establish routines which ensure that high levels of cleanliness are implemented and maintained. Staff are diligent as well as respectful when supporting residents with completing personal laundry, and understand the essential aspect of maintaining residents’ dignity.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Each resident is encouraged to undertake domiciliary tasks as part of their daily living. These might include internal or external tasks, and many of these activities are incorporated into their sensory diets, which aids processing and regulation, as well as instilling a sense of accomplishment. Patience, perseverance and praise are key!

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We would ask that residents do not bring valuables such as family heirlooms to our home, as we cannot guarantee their safety. We may place restrictions on some items that could pose a risk to other residents and staff. These include non-approved drugs and medications, solvent-based products and lighters.

How do activities work?

Each resident has an activity schedule, which incorporates internal and external activities, as well as sensory diets which have been devised to offer continuity. Each resident is supported to undertake activities with the appropriate level of support and encouragement. Residents can communicate preferences, which staff will respond to, to ensure that residents feel valued.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We require our care plans to include the frequent assessment of any restrictions. For example, procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

We work with social workers, family members and residents to develop care plans which are in the best interests of our residents. We use a variety of communication tools and work with health professionals to aid each resident in having a say about every aspect of their care. Care plans are regularly reviewed, and family members will be asked for their input.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is off road parking to the front of our home.

What is the smoking policy?

The Waves is a smoke free home, however, there is a large garden where people can smoke if they wish.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
