Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We recognise the importance of maintaining relationships with family and friends. We encourage our residents to visit or stay with family and attend events, where they wish to. Some people go for overnight stays with family or go away on holidays together. Where people need support to be with their family, our support workers are happy to assist with this.

Can friends and families visit?

Residents all have their own flat with their own front door, so they are able to have family and friends at any time they wish. We often have activities outside, such as barbecues, and we host a variety of different events and celebrations, which family and friends are welcome to join.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we strive to keep the loved ones of our residents involved in their care, where this is in line with the resident’s wishes. We will work with residents and their loved ones to figure out the best way to keep everyone informed, on an individual basis. For example, some families like to receive photos via messaging platforms, or regular updates by telephone or email.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Most residents have their own mobile phones and are able to contact their family directly. Where people need support with contact, we have the landline or a tablet to make video or audio calls.

What are the bedrooms like?

Here at The Mews, our bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. Individuals are encouraged to decorate their flats with their own choices of furnishings and personal items. Everything within their flat is based on own choices and preferences.

Are external doors kept locked?

All of our flats have their own lockable front door and the courtyard has locked gated access. Where individuals are able to go out independently, they will have key fob access to be able to open and close the main gate.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Each individual is supported to create their own menu and do their own shopping. Our staff are available to support with the preparation and cooking of meals. All dietary and cultural needs are supported and residents are encouraged to eat a variety of foods, or try new ones, if they wish.

How does laundry work?

Each individual has their own laundry facilities in their flat, and are supported to complete laundry tasks as needed.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Staff encourage our residents to complete these tasks, to promote their independence. We can provide support to assist with activities of daily living, and this will be outlined in each individual’s care plan.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We would discuss any items of concern on an individual basis, considering any risk factors involved, and whether these risks can be safely managed.

How do activities work?

Activities are supported on an individual basis. Some people like to have a planner in place and other people prefer to decide what they would like to do on a daily basis. Everyone is encouraged to take part in activities they enjoy and also to try new experiences. We often have group activities in the courtyard, as well as outings where people can come together and enjoy socialising, if they wish.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We use a positive behaviour support (PBS) approach and where individuals need to have more input around this, we are able to work with Priory’s PBS practitioners to implement support plans.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

We offer a person-centred approach and work with our residents to develop support plans with the involvement of family and wider care teams, as appropriate for each person. These plans are regularly reviewed to ensure they reflect progress and changes in the type of support each person needs.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is parking available on-road, outside The Mews

What is the smoking policy?

There is a smoking area in the grounds, away from the flats. We do not permit smoking indoors, as this is a health and safety hazard. Residents can buy cigarettes or vapes at the shops.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
