Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their family homes. Risks are carefully managed and this may mean the individual’s key worker will come along on the visit.

Can friends and families visit?

The home welcomes visits from the loved ones of the people we support. We actively encourage family and friends take part in our activities, too. All we ask is that we get advance notice as some of our residents may become stressed when unknown visitors arrive. Unfortunately, family members cannot stay overnight.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Regular catch-ups are arranged either in person or via telephone, to ensure families are kept informed. We will work with families on an individual basis to figure out the best way of keeping them involved.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

We have cordless phones for residents to call their loved ones. In addition, we can support our residents to get their own mobile phone, where appropriate.

What are the bedrooms like?

Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms, and we can support them to do so. All of the bedrooms come fully furnished, with a bed, storage space and other furnishings.

Are external doors kept locked?

No, our external doors are not locked, although residents will be risk assessed to determine the level of security needed to keep them safe.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents are free to eat what they want, whenever they want. They prepare their own meals with support, if necessary. We know some people have special dietary requirements and these are catered for. Family members and our nutritionists are consulted, too.

How does laundry work?

Clean clothes and bedding are provided and residents are able to do their own washing, with support, using the facilities in our utility room.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Tasks around the home such as cleaning, is carried out by our residents using a rota. Our care team support them with these tasks, and use their monthly resident meetings to assign chores.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

High risk personal items shouldn’t be brought to the house, as we cannot guarantee their safety. We may place restrictions on some items where the risks cannot be appropriately managed, such as non-approved drugs and medications, solvent-based products and lighters.

How do activities work?

Residents can choose from a variety of activities in-house as well as visits into the community. We encourage people to take part in a varied calendar of activities, including group days out, accessing community services, and activities that promote independence. Communication tools are used to find out their views, and residents always have a say in what they get up to.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We work from detailed support plans, which consider each individuals’ unique needs. These plans will be reviewed and adapted to reflect changes in behaviours. We are served by a regional PBS lead, who can support our in-house team, where required.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

We use a variety of communication tools to find out the views of the person we care. We also work with families and social workers, as we value their input.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is space for one car on the drive. There is a paid car park nearby, if there is no available on-street parking.

What is the smoking policy?

At present, we are a non-smoking home. Residents can smoke outside of the house, if this is what they choose.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
