About this location

St Winnow is located in Plymstock, which is a suburb of Plymouth in the county of Devon. We offer residential support for five males and females who are autistic or have a learning disability. Our service is in a cul-de-sac next to a public playing field, in a pleasant residential area.

Our team are dedicated to supporting the people we care for to live a fulfilling life.

We can also support those who have:

About our service

Our facilities and environment

Offering a relaxed, homely environment, our service is in a large detached, house. The layout of the house allows people the chance to interact or to gain privacy when required.

There are three bedrooms in the main house and two flatlets, including one on the ground floor. The flats have their own bedrooms, lounge areas, and bathrooms. The ground floor flat has a walk-in bath. Two of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities, and there is a communal bathroom.

In summary, we offer:

We also have a very large garden, complete with:

  • Secure fencing
  • Lawn

We also have specialised equipment within the home, such as sensory lighting.

Our bedrooms

All of our bedrooms are comfortable, welcoming and can be personalised to individual tastes. Our bedrooms have features such as:

  • En-suite facilities, containing either a shower, a bath and a wet room
  • Robust, low arousal furniture

Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at St Winnow has their own person-centred care plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals involved in their care. We aim to help everyone in our care to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as going out in the community, personal care, cooking and cleaning, managing finances and maintaining family relationships.

Our support approaches at St Winnow include positive behaviour support (PBS). We also have support from a local multidisciplinary team. In addition, we use tools such as the Outcomes Star™ to support our residents to achieve their goals.

The lengths of the placements that we offer at St Winnow can be medium or long-term residential, depending on the needs of each person.

Activities

Everyone who lives at St Winnow has their own personalised activities planner and are encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. Our dedicated team organise a variety of activities at the home, as well as out in the community.

We focus on supporting our residents to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities in the local community.

Pathways

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which help the people we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.

We work closely with Plymouth City Council and surrounding areas such as Devon County Council, Cornwall Council and Torbay Council, to create bespoke pathways for people.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We can facilitate home leave by working with you and your loved one. We can support you with a person-centred plan, we drop home or pick up to promote visits for periods of times that meet both family and residents needs working to risk management plans to support positive contact.

Can friends and families visit?

We have an open-door policy at St Winnow and welcome family participation, family and friends are welcome to drop by unannounced or we can facilitate a planned visit of your choosing. We also invite family and friends to events and activities in the home. Unfortunately, we are unable to cater to visitors staying overnight.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes, we actively encourage family involvement in all aspects of your loved one’s care. We will speak to each resident’s circle of support on an individual basis to decide the best way to keep you in touch, whether this is involved regular in-person meetings, weekly catch-ups via the telephone, or more ongoing contact, we can facilitate this.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Yes, loved ones can call or Skype, we also encourage ad hoc visits. Our team can support where required.

What are the bedrooms like?

We like your room to be person centred. If you choose to live at St Winnow, we will work with you to decorate and furnish your room to your own personal taste, allowing you to bring personal belongings and furniture with you, should you choose.

Are external doors kept locked?

Yes, due to the nature of the service, external doors are locked, however every resident will be risk assessed which will detail the level of security needed. This will change over the course of the day, to ensure residents’ safety at all times.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

We encourage residents to be fully involved with menu planning, meals are prepared and served at a time that suits our resident’s individual needs. Our team will make accommodations for special dietary requirements, and provide alternative meals, where someone changes their mind about what they want to eat.

How does laundry work?

We have a laundry room that enables us to clean and dry laundry on site. Residents are provided with the level of support that best suits their needs.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Staff support residents with all housekeeping and domiciliary tasks. We want people that live here to build up their daily living skills, and encourage people to participate in tasks such as cleaning, where they can.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal substances onto the premises. Other items of concern would be subject to a risk assessment.

How do activities work?

We cater for both group and individual activities, working with residents to provide and facilitate activities of their choosing that cater to personal interests. Everyone at St Winnow participates in a varied calendar of activities, including visits into the community.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we promote least restrictive practice. All our team are trained in this, and PBS. We will work with an individual and Priory’s PBS team to provide a person-centred behaviour support plan, if required.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we actively encourage family involvement in all aspects of your loved one’s care. Care plans are regularly reviewed, and families can be included in this process, if this is in the best interests of the resident.

What are the car parking facilities?

We have a public free car park situated to the side of our home.

What is the smoking policy?

We have a designated area in the side garden for residents to smoke or to vape. We have a no smoking policy within the house.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
