Comments from our residents and their family and friends

In his previous accommodation, his room was sparse and he never went out. Now he has his personal belongings in his bedroom, he goes into town centre to the local coffee shop and people know him. The change has been dramatic, his eyes used to look sad, now they are smiling and bright, it is wonderful

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to visit their family homes and attend family events. Any possible risks are managed and this may mean the individual’s key worker comes along too.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit the home. We encourage them to get involved in all aspects of life in the home including our activities. All we ask is that we are given advance notice of any visits. We want to make sure that residents are not stressed or anxious around visiting time, especially around faces they don’t know. Unfortunately, family members cannot stay overnight.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

We keep in touch with families either in person or via telephone, to ensure they feel fully informed. We can send photos and any updates, to let you know what the residents have been up to.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Residents can use our landline, our cordless phones or their own mobile phones to keep in touch with families. We can provide support as needed.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are fully furnished and residents are free to decorate them as they wish. Riverview has a mix of self-contained flats and en-suite bedrooms, and everyone has access to their own private bathroom. Residents in the flats also have their own kitchen/dining/living quarters.

Are external doors kept locked?

Our external gates are kept locked, but residents are individually assessed for their security needs. However, they are able to enjoy the wonderful gardens at the home at any time.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents prepare their own meals with support from our staff, as part of their activities of daily living. We support with food shopping, preparation and washing up after mealtimes, ensuring that all dietary needs are catered for and any issues are resolved. Our residents can use our communal kitchen, and those living in the flats also can use their private kitchen facilities.

How does laundry work?

Laundry facilities are available in our utility room. Residents do their own clothes washing, with support if they need it. Clean bedding is provided.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

We have a cleaning rota in the home which residents take part in. We encourage people to take pride in their environment, and practice their daily living skills, including cleaning and other domestic tasks. Our team can support, where needed.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

This would be discussed and reviewed on an individual basis, in line with the usual risk assessments.

How do activities work?

Residents take part in activities in the home and whilst they are out and about in the community. Everyone has a tailored activities planner, which reflects their personal preferences and aspirations, and will include a varied calendar of things to do.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Riverview has a PBS practitioner, who works with residents to understand their needs and put in place the right support to meet them. We also use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means advocating for minimal restrictions for our residents. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed frequently, for example procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Care plans are developed and reviewed with the best interests of residents in mind. This means that we consult with everyone who knows and works with the individual. We also value the input of the resident themselves into their own care.

What are the car parking facilities?

We have a large driveway with limited parking but we do have on-road parking available too.

What is the smoking policy?

Individuals can smoke by the designated smoking area in the back garden, which has a shelter. We don’t permit smoking inside the building, and this includes vapes.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
