Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their own homes. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit and participate in activities at the home, on an individual basis or within peer activities. Visits are usually planned in advance to support individual needs.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Family and significant people are encouraged to be involved in our residents’ care and support, to a level that works best for the person. Approaches to how family are involved are agreed upon, on an individual basis.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

We have landlines and tablets at the home, which our residents can use to make audio or video calls, and individuals can be supported with this. Some residents have their own phones or tablets, and are able to communicate directly with family and friends as they wish.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished and residents are supported to personalise them to suit their needs and wishes. Residents can have their room decorated based on their chosen theme and furnish it with personal items, to create a space that is their own.

Are external doors kept locked?

No, our doors are not locked so residents can come and go as they please, in accordance with their care plans, although our back door is fitted with a key pad lock for safety.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

We have a three-month plan which is created by a dietician and features a monthly menu plan. Residents, with support from our staff, are all involved in choosing the menu for the following week. We encourage people to maintain healthy diets with meal plans to suit their individual tastes and dietary requirements. We also have themed meals and special events throughout year, as well as meals out, to support socialisation and community involvement.

How does laundry work?

Our team will ensure that residents always have access to clean clothes and bedding. Residents are able to make use of laundry facilities either independently or with support from our staff.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

The staff team support with the overall cleanliness and household tasks. Individuals are encouraged to take part in tidying and cleaning their own rooms and flats, as appropriate and in line with their support plans.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal substances onto the premises. We would also ask that people do not bring high risk personal items into the house. Others items will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

How do activities work?

Activities are planned according to our residents’ choices and interests, and everyone has their own tailored activities planner. This will include both in-house activities as well as visits into the community. Their key worker may use a variety of communication tools to ensure they can have an input into the planning of activities. We also seek to encourage individuals to try out new experiences, by working with them to explore different opportunities.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

We have person-centred plans for each of our residents and in the main, we support lower level behaviours that may challenge. Where needed, we use the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which means we focus on proactive strategies, rather than physical intervention. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed frequently, for example procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes, we encourage families and extended support providers to be involved with the care plans, where appropriate and in line with the resident’s wishes. We use preferred communication methods so that each person is able to contribute as much as possible to their support planning. Support plans are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect progress and changes in the support needed.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is ample off-road parking.

What is the smoking policy?

We have a designated smoking area on the grounds. Residents are able to buy cigarettes or vapes at the shops, as this is their choice. We can also support residents with smoking cessation programmes, if this is something they wish to work on.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

How to make a referral

Our service provides high quality support to people with varying levels of need. Referrals can be made through the individual’s social care team or, if relevant, their local health authority. If you are a professional looking to make a referral, please call us or fill in our enquiry form.
