Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We support our residents to attend family events and visit their own homes. We will work with the resident and their relatives to ensure possible risks are managed and that everyone is supported. This might mean that the individual’s key worker will come along on the visit.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to come visit, and can even participate in activities at the home. Unfortunately, though, we cannot cater for visitors to stay overnight.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

We understand that many families will want to be involved in their loved one’s care, and will work to make this happen. Every three months, you will be invited to a meeting at the home, where you will meet with the residents’ support team and hear about recent happenings at the home. We can also arrange more regular catch-ups, either in person or via telephone, to ensure you are kept informed.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Our home has one phone line which is a cordless phone can be used by residents at any time. In addition, we can support our residents to get their own mobile phone, where appropriate.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are all furnished, and residents are supported to personalise their spaces, and make it feel their own. Some of the furniture has been purchased to fit the specifications of the service and some of it is fitted, and therefore cannot be removed.

Are external doors kept locked?

We do operate an open door policy, meaning most residents can come and go whenever they choose. Our door is only locked at night, for security purposes, and residents are able to open from the inside, if they were to wish to step out into the garden.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Those with us on a residential placement have their meals provided by our chef, prepared within our on-site commercial kitchen. This includes a light lunch and a main meal at dinner time, decided by the resident cohort themselves. Choices are provided, and alternatives will always be made available. Snacks and beverages are available at all times. Residents staying with us on a rehabilitation placement have set days where they cook meals of their choosing, to help them develop their independent living skills. On other days, they join communal meals in the dining room.

How does laundry work?

Our team will ensure that residents always have access to clean clothes and bedding. We have two utility rooms with laundry facilities, which residents undergoing rehabilitation make use of either independently or with the support worker. Those staying with us on a residential basis are likely to have their laundry undertaken by staff in the commercial laundry machines.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Our housekeeper will undertake general cleaning duties, and keep the home in good order. However, we encourage the people who live here to take pride in their environment. Many of our residents participate in some domiciliary work, and there is a rota in place to assign tasks. Our care team support them with these tasks, and task allocation is also discussed in our monthly resident meetings.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal substances onto the premises. We would also ask that people do not bring high risk personal items into the house. We may place restrictions on some items where the risks cannot be appropriately managed, such as non-approved drugs and medications, solvent-based products and lighters.

How do activities work?

Every resident has a tailored activities planner, which will include both in-house activities as well as visits into the community. Their key worker may use a variety of communication tools to ensure the resident can have an input into the planning of activities. Activities are reviewed at ‘Our Voice’ meetings monthly with the activities co-ordinator, whose role it is to organise days out and events at the home.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Traffic light support plans are utilised, and we take a positive behaviour support (PBS) approach. This means our team seek to understand our resident’s needs, and put in place strategies to meet them proactively. We require our care plans which include restrictions to be assessed frequently, for example procedures for interventions such as pro re nata (PRN) medication are regularly reviewed and removed, where possible.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

We work with social workers, family members and residents to develop care plans which are in the best interests of our residents. We use a variety of communication tools and work with health professionals to aid each resident in having a say about every aspect of their care.

Residents and their core staff team review individual support plans monthly in ‘My Meetings.’ In addition, residents can also voice any concerns in monthly ‘Our Voice’ group meetings. Here at Glebe House, our management team have an open door policy, and residents can come have a chat about the support they receive at any time.

What are the car parking facilities?

Visitors can park at the car park at the front of the building. There is additional parking at the back of the building.

What is the smoking policy?

Residents can smoke by the designated smoking area in the back garden, which has a shelter. We don’t permit smoking inside the building, and this includes vapes. Residents are able to buy cigarettes and vapes at the shops, if this is what they choose. We can support people with smoking cessation programmes, if cutting down or quitting is something they would like to pursue.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
