Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

Residents will be supported by staff members to arrange and attend any family event or home visits. Their team may provide further support at these times. Staff will communicate with family members to discuss any risks associated with events or visits, and support families with managing these.

Can friends and families visit?

Family and friends are welcome to visit their loved ones, and join in with meal times or any activities. We would appreciate being informed of any visits in advance, to ensure we can provide further support to those individuals who may become anxious around unknown visits, especially within the communal areas of the homes. Combs Court cannot accommodate overnight stays for visitors.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

We as a home are keen to ensure families are aware of their loved ones wellbeing and any changes to their support. We can offer phone calls, emails or face-to-face meetings, depending on the preferences of the families. We are happy to talk to loved ones whenever it is a convenient time, within 24 hours of a request.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Each home has a secure landline, to enable residents to contact friends and their family members. Staff will support residents with dialling any phone numbers of their choosing, and support with any communications, as required.

What are the bedrooms like?

Bedrooms are fully furnished with wardrobes, chest of drawers and a bed. Each room has a built-in wash-basin facility. For those who would like to have more personalised rooms, furniture and over items such as photos can be purchased or brought in by residents. We will support the people who live here to personalise their room as per their wishes.

Are external doors kept locked?

Combs Court is located in a built-up area, so we do keep our external gate locked. However, every resident will be risk assessed to determine their security needs. All individuals are free to exit and enter the communal spaces as they please. We do request that residents do not enter the other properties within Combs Court without an invitation, as this is a safe and private area of those living in that property.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Each property has their own dining area. This is a place where all residents can come together and have a friendly meal. Each home or self-contained building will have their own rolling four-week menu which has been decided and discussed with all residents. Our team will ensure that everyone has their choice of dishes, taking into account their preferences, as well as their need for a healthy and balanced diet. We will support individuals who would like to get involved with making meals at these times.

How does laundry work?

Each home has their own utility equipment or a utility room. Residents are encouraged to participate with their daily living skills, which includes their laundry. Residents can access their utility room, with as much support as they need. We will complete laundry on behalf of those who are unable to.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

Combs Court has a housekeeper, who leads on the domiciliary tasks during the week days. Our support workers also support with these tasks, as well as encourage residents to join in and develop their daily living skills.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We may place restrictions on some items where the risks cannot be appropriately managed, this will be looked at on a case-by-case basis. We do not allow pets at the home.

How do activities work?

Each person has their own person-centred activity planner, which is reviewed frequently, this allows residents and staff to work together to ensure residents have opportunities to do activities they wish to do, with or without staff support.

We support social opportunities as well as more formal sessions such as ASDAN skills courses. People are encouraged to take part in local community events, for example, a number of our residents attend day and evening social clubs and events. People are regularly involved in cooking within their area of the home, assisting with preparing meals or baking cakes. Alternatively, people are able to relax in their own space reading or undertaking hobbies if they choose.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

As a site, our staff are trained using the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, this training is completed annually and is adjusted to allow for person-centred strategies for each individual resident. The purpose of this framework is to ensure our support is focused on proactive strategies instead of physical intervention. We also have person-centred positive behaviour support (PBS) plans in place, as well as traffic light plans. This means our team are fully aware of the needs of each person, any behaviours they exhibit, and how to support them appropriately.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

On admission, we work with family members and health professional to develop person-centred care plans which reflect the person’s unique needs. We also involve residents in some aspects of care planning, to give those an opportunity to express their wishes within their care. All support plans are reviewed monthly and changes can be made as and when required.

What are the car parking facilities?

Combs Court has a car park which is accessible at all times. The main gate accessing the car park is locked, so we do request that visitors call the Combs Court landline ahead of their arrival, so we can support them to access the car park.

What is the smoking policy?

Residents are permitted to smoke within the designated smoking area, which is within the grounds. A cigarette bin is available here to safely dispose of cigarette ends. We do not permit smoking to occur within the buildings, and this includes the use of vapes. Residents can purchase cigarettes, tobacco or vapes, independently or with our support, if that is what they choose.

What are your fees and how are they funded?

Our fees can vary, and are based on an assessment of each individual's needs. Many people are eligible for financial help towards the cost of support, and this funding can be accessed by contacting your local authority. Once funding has been agreed, we will work with your local care team to put together a bespoke package of care. Please note, referrals for NHS or Local Authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
